Discover Australia’s Wild Side: The Top End Explorer

For many Australians, the Northern Territory is high on the travel wish list but somehow keeps getting pushed down. There's no doubt it's big, remote and perhaps a little daunting to explore alone, which is exactly why our Top End Explorer is such a special trip.

Over seven unforgettable days, we journey through some of Australia’s most extraordinary landscapes from the ancient escarpments of Kakadu, to the powerful cultural landscapes of Arnhem Land and the dramatic sandstone gorges of Nitmiluk.

This is a chance to experience the Top End up close and deeply, with expert local guides, an adventurous group of women and the opportunity to explore a part of Australia that many travellers never reach.

What Makes the Top End So Special?

The Top End feels unlike anywhere else. Here, tropical wetlands meet vast outback landscapes, ancient Aboriginal culture is deeply woven into the land, and waterfalls spill from sandstone cliffs into crystal-clear swimming holes.

In early Spring, the weather is near perfect - sunny days and cool evenings. The dry season is in full swing but waterholes are open, tracks are accessible and wildlife is thriving.

Our Top End journey takes us through three iconic national parks:

  • Kakadu National Park – one of the world’s most significant cultural landscapes
  • Nitmiluk National Park – home to the dramatic Katherine Gorge system
  • Litchfield National Park – famous for waterfalls, swimming holes and giant termite mounds

And perhaps most special of all, we’ll step into Arnhem Land, a vast Aboriginal-owned region that very few travellers get to visit.

What Will You See and Do?

Every day on this tour brings a new adventure. This is an active trip and you’ll need to be comfortable spending several hours on your feet each day and being off-grid. That said, a moderate level of activity and mobility are all that’s needed.

One of the highlights is crossing into Arnhem Land, where we visit a significant Aboriginal rock art site with a local guide who shares stories of the land, culture and traditions that have been passed down for thousands of years.

In Kakadu, we explore some of the park’s most stunning locations. We hike into Maguk (Barramundi Gorge) for a refreshing swim beneath towering escarpments and watch the sun set from the famous Nadab Lookout at Ubirr, overlooking floodplains that stretch to the horizon.

We also cruise the East Alligator River on the Guluyambi Cultural Cruise, guided by local Bininj people who share their deep connection to Country.

Further south, we reach the sandstone landscapes of Nitmiluk National Park, where a dawn cruise through Katherine Gorge reveals glowing cliff faces, quiet water and abundant birdlife.

Finally, we slow down and soak it all in at Litchfield National Park - nature’s own playground - where we swim at Florence Falls, explore Buley Rockholes and wander through landscapes dotted with towering magnetic termite mounds.

Throughout the week there are hikes, swims, cultural experiences and plenty of moments to sit back and take in the incredible scenery.

What Will You Learn?

The Top End is not just beautiful; it is deeply cultural and ancient.

Throughout the journey you'll gain insight into the history, traditions and contemporary life of the region’s Traditional Owners. From ancient rock art sites to cultural centres and guided experiences, this trip offers a deeper understanding of how Aboriginal culture remains connected to the land today.

These insightful encounters often become some of the most meaningful moments of the journey.

Accommodation: Part of the Adventure

Accommodation on this trip is simple, comfortable and very much part of the Top End experience.

We begin with a night in a comfortable hotel in Darwin, before heading into the wilderness. In Kakadu we stay in air-conditioned donga-style rooms near the East Alligator River. The dongas are basic but comfortable and perfectly located for exploring this incredible region.

Later in the trip we embrace the outback with some bush camping, sleeping in good-sized tents with deluxe swags. Campgrounds are well located within the national parks, giving us the chance to experience spectacular sunsets, quiet evenings under the stars sharing stories and the unique atmosphere of the Top End at night.

The Adventurous Women Difference

Exploring remote Australia becomes even more special when you do it with the right group. Adventurous Women trips are designed to be small, supportive and incredibly welcoming. You’ll be travelling with a group of like-minded women who love adventure, nature and discovering new places.

Our experienced AW tour leader is the glue that brings the group together, making sure everyone feels included, supported and ready to make the most of the journey. It’s not unusual for lifelong friendships to begin on AW trips!

We're heading to the Top End in August this year, which is a fantastic time to visit. If you'd like to know more schedule a call with our team and start dusting off your walking shoes!
