Is Sri Lanka adventure travel's best kept secret?

Written by Mr. AW | May 28, 2026 6:52:46 AM

What comes to mind when you hear 'Sri Lanka'? Perhaps it's palm-tree lined beaches. Or maybe it's cricket, where the sport borders on a national religion. Maybe it's tea plantations, scenic trains, or perhaps it's simply a country you've 'heard good things about' but never quite looked into more deeply.

For the Adventurous Women team, hearing the words 'Sri Lanka' prompts an entirely different reaction: 'Why isn't everyone talking about Sri Lanka?'

We know that this small island nation punches above its weight when it comes to travel: extraordinary variety packed into a place that feels unhurried, welcoming and surprisingly easy to fall in love with.

In a single trip, you can spot wild elephants at sunrise, hike through tea country, eat curry from generations-old family recipes, wander ancient archaeological sites and finish the day watching the Indian Ocean roll in.

Here's just a few reasons we think Sri Lanka remains one of travel's best kept secrets:

Wildlife That Feels Wild

When people think of safari, they often think of Africa. But Sri Lanka offers some of the most accessible and rewarding wildlife experiences anywhere in the world. There are more than two dozen designated national parks in Sri Lanka, meaning that more than 9% of the island is dedicated to wildlife.

And because the island is relatively compact, Sri Lanka's parks are surprisingly accessible. Within these parks elephants wander freely across the landscape. Monkeys crash through trees overhead while peacocks strut impossibly brightly through the dust. Yala National Park is a particular highlight with its leopard population.

Wildlife also isn't confined to national parks alone. It's woven into the rhythms of everyday life across the island - something you'll notice again and again as you travel through.

The Pekoe Trail: Sri Lanka on Foot

For hikers, The Pekoe Trail may be one of the most scenic routes you've never heard of.

Stretching through Sri Lanka's lush hill country, the trail winds across tea plantations, cloud forests, mountain villages, eucalyptus groves, and ridgelines with sweeping views over emerald-green valleys.

Beyond the scenery, the Pekoe Trail connects travellers to everyday Sri Lankan life. One moment you're walking through silent highland forests; the next, you're passing through working tea farms with the kind of unhurried pace that invites real conversation along the way. The landscapes are lived-in and deeply connected to the people who call them home.

A Culture Shaped by the World

Sri Lanka's location placed it directly along ancient trade routes for centuries, and those layers of influence are still visible everywhere you look. Indian, Arab, Portuguese, Dutch and British presence over time have all left their mark, creating a distinctly Sri Lankan culture.

The island's architecture, food, religion and language all reflect the influences of the past. Serene Buddhist temples sit alongside modern architecture and bustling local markets overflowing with fresh produce. Spices and ingredients come together in dishes that feel both familiar and entirely new to most visitors.

Sri Lanka has a strong sense of cultural identity - one that shows up in its festivals, its food, its history, and the conversations you find yourself in along the way.

Sri Lanka remains one of the most rewarding destinations on the map. Adventurous Women's Sri Lanka Adventure is designed to showcase both the island's iconic highlights and its lesser-known corners, exploring alongside local guides and a small group of like-minded women. It's a journey that is sure to exceed expectations.
