Overview

Explore Nepal with AW

The Nepal Pikey Peak Trek is designed to challenge, connect and inspire. Travelling alongside a supportive group of like-minded women for 13 days- and guided by experienced female local guides- you’ll experience not only the power of the Himalayas, but also the camaraderie and encouragement that comes from sharing the adventure together.

This journey immerses you in a land of towering peaks, ancient traditions, deep spirituality and warm hospitality. At the heart of the experience is a demanding 6-night trek to Pikey Peak, where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Everest, a deep immersion in mountain culture and the unmatched satisfaction of completing something truly meaningful.

This is not a casual hike. The trek requires sustained effort at altitude, includes basic accommodation in traditional Nepalese tea-house lodges, and involves stepping away from modern comforts. Fitness, preparation, and the right mindset are essential.

Before and after the trek, the journey continues through Nepal’s vibrant cultural and spiritual landscape. Explore the temples and hidden backstreets of Kathmandu, unwind in a stunning mountain lodge while learning from its inspiring female owner and visit a Tibetan monastery for an intimate exchange with resident monks. We also spend time in Bhaktapur, one of Nepal’s most beautifully preserved ancient cities, rich in history and local life.

For those ready for a challenge, this trip will reward you with not only incredible landscapes, but also a deep sense of achievement and the lasting connections formed along the way. (Note: This trip can be combined with our Bhutan Active Adventure)

Fitness/ Walk Grade

This Nepal trek is physically demanding, with challenging terrain and high altitude. A strong level of fitness and stamina is essential- not optional- for both your safety and the safety of the group. At altitude, fatigue can significantly increase your ability to keep up with the group.

You must arrive well-prepared with solid cardiovascular fitness and the endurance to handle long days of hiking with sustained ascents and descents. The terrain is often uneven, so good balance and stability are also required. This is not a trip to 'get fit on.' Proper training is expected. Being well-prepared will ensure you can participate fully, stay safe and get the most out of the experience.

Daily itinerary

Day 1 Thu 22 Apr Kathmandu - Arrival and welcome dinner

Your adventure begins in Kathmandu, the vibrant capital nestled in the Himalayan foothills. In the evening, we’ll gather for a 5:30 pm group meeting and trip briefing, followed by a delicious welcome dinner, a perfect way to get to know your fellow travellers and kick off the journey ahead.

Note: We’ve included three nights here at the start of your trip to give you plenty of time to recover from jet lag, check or purchase any gear for the trek, and explore the many wonders of Kathmandu with our guide. You’re welcome to arrive a day earlier at your own expense if you wish, though it isn’t necessary.

Day 2 Fri 23 Apr Kathmandu - City tour; Free afternoon

Today is a relaxed guided introduction to Kathmandu, designed to give us time not only to absorb the vibrant culture and sights but also to check your gear and prepare for the trek ahead.

We start with a guided walk through the heart of old Kathmandu, exploring secret alleys, hidden courtyards, and bustling bazaars that most visitors never see. Along the way, you’ll discover a fascinating mix of temples blending Hindu and Buddhist traditions, colorful local markets overflowing with fruit, spices, and brass, bronze, and copper wares, and the diverse people of the Kathmandu Valley.

Our walk leads to the magnificent Kathmandu Durbar (Palace) Square, overlooked by the Hanuman Dhoka Palace, once home to Nepalese royalty. Here, we’ll learn about the city’s rich history and explore its stunning temples.
After lunch, the afternoon is free - you can check your gear, do a bit of shopping, or simply relax.

Day 3 Sun 23 Apr Kathmandu - Kathmandu Valley Cultural Highlights

After breakfast, we’ll spend the day exploring the Kathmandu Valley with a guided tour of three UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

We begin in Patan (Lalitpur), the ancient city of fine arts, where Patan Durbar Square showcases beautifully preserved temples and palaces. We’ll also visit the residence of the Living Goddess, the Patan Kumari, who may choose to bless us with her presence.

Next, we travel to Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world. Its watchful eyes gaze over the valley, and the surrounding prayer wheels, monasteries, and shops create a vibrant, spiritual atmosphere. Lunch will be on a rooftop terrace overlooking the stupa.

Our final stop is Pashupatinath, one of Hinduism’s holiest temples, located on the sacred Bagmati River. Here, pilgrims, sadhus, and worshippers create a lively spiritual scene, and the riverside cremation ghats offer a profound glimpse into local life and tradition. (note: witnessing cremation rituals can be confronting for some; you are welcome to opt out of this part of the visit if you prefer)

Note: Roads in Nepal are often damaged or affected by floods, heavy rains and other weather events and maintenance and repairs are slow. Therefore year by year, the road conditions change. If the road to Japre is in poor condition, we may leave Kathmandu on the afternoon of day 3 to shorten the drive on day 4. This decision will be made 1-3 months prior to the trip and all travellers will be informed.

The trail initially follows a road under construction before reaching Japre, a small village perched above a deep valley. With stunning views of Everest and nearby peaks, Japre offers a peaceful setting with a local gompa (Tibetan Buddhist monastery) where we settle in for our first night on the trail.

Once at the ridge, the trail levels out into the classic “Nepali flat”(gentle ups and downs) winding through dense forest. Across the valley, you’ll spot Thubten Choling Monastery, home to 500 Tibetan nuns, nestled above Junbesi. Solo Travellers

If you’re travelling solo not to worry, you’re in good company! Many of our travellers join solo and our trips are designed to feel welcoming and supportive from the moment you arrive. It’s a great way to meet like-minded women, and friendships often form quickly along the way.

While on tour, we have you sharing with different women from the group at different times - great for group bonding and also for alleviating any potential annoyances that may occur as a result of travelling with the same person throughout a tour. Or, if you’d prefer your own room on the trip, this is possible for five nights for an additional supplement.  You can select this option at the time of booking.

What do I carry on the trek?

On the trek, you will need to carry a day pack with your water, sun protection, layers and personal valuables (passport, money, phone, etc)

Sherpas will carry your main bag between accommodations.  Baggage is limited to 15 kg per person to ensure porters can comfortably carry bags safely and responsibly. Suitcases and wheeled luggage are not suitable for trekking in Nepal, so you’ll need a duffle bag or soft backpack instead. If needed, affordable waterproof or canvas duffles are easy to purchase in Kathmandu before the trek begins.

A detailed packing list and additional information will be provided after booking

Arrival and Departure details

The trip begins in Kathmandu on the evening of 22 April and concludes in Kathmandu on the morning of 4 May. We’ve intentionally designed the itinerary to include extra time at the start of the journey, allowing you to recover from jet lag, settle into Nepal, and prepare for the trek ahead.

Please note that Nepal has only one international airport, so all travellers will need to arrive into and depart from Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu.

Note: this tour can be combined with our Bhutan Active Adventure, which commences on 4 May.

Who will be leading the trip?

All AW trips are accompanied by one of our experienced Tour Leaders. Their role is to take the hassle out of your travels and help you get the most out of your experience, while embracing the Adventurous Women way.

You’ll also be supported by a Nepalese city and trekking guides, who provide invaluable insight into culture, history and more. Sherpas (porters) will also be on hand to carry your main luggage during the trek.

Do you accommodate dietary requests?

We do our best to accommodate dietary requirements and food allergies on every tour.  It’s important that any requirements are communicated accurately at the time of booking as when we are in the mountains, options are limited.  We’ll discuss with you the options and any necessary precautions or additional preparation needed.

Accommodation

In Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Phlapu we’ll be in hotels or lodges with private twin-share rooms with ensuite bathrooms.  A single supplement may be available for these nights.

During our trek, we will be in remote areas and staying in tea houses (6 nights). These Nepalese-style accommodations are basic but clean, and most often without attached (ensuite) bathrooms or hot showers. Toilets are also often 'squat' toilets.

Prices are based on twin-share rooms and do not include any additional fees that lodge owners may charge for single rooms, private bathrooms, hot showers (if available), or battery charging. Since these extra charges vary between lodges and cannot be confirmed in advance, we exclude them from the cost to avoid passing on estimated costs to you.

How will we be travelling?

We’ll be travelling by private van, bus and jeep on the trip. It’s important to note that road conditions in Nepal change season to season, year to year. For that reason, driving times provided are estimates only and we reserve the right to alter the itinerary should it be required due to road conditions.

Do I need a visa?

Australian passport holders require a visa to enter Nepal. While obtaining travel documents and covering the associated fees is the traveller’s responsibility, we will provide clear instructions and helpful reminders in the lead up to the trip.
