Overview

Explore the Whitsundays with AW

This  week-long adventure takes you to far north Queensland to spend time exploring our Great Barrier Reef on board the Solway Lass, a 122-year-old Tallship.  Enjoy a wonderful mix of sailing, hiking and water sports!
Immerse yourself in the exquisite natural habitats of Whitsunday Islands National Park as you traverse impressive, age-old walking tracks including the Ngaro Sea Trail. These age-old trails aren't connected to the mainland, the only way to access the remote island tracks is by water.

Solway Lass, your very comfortable liveaboard tall ship acts as your floating home. Let her transport you between secluded bays and tropical islands. Get as involved as you want, grab the helm or hoist the sails. Alternatively, sit back and feel the breeze on your face as the wind carries you to your next location.

Fitness/ Walk Grade

This is an active trip, with plenty of opportunities for hiking, snorkelling and swimming.  Most of the hikes can be achieved by anyone with a general level of fitness, but mobility is the key and being physically prepared will help you get the most out of the experience!

Day 1 Mon 03 Aug Arrival Day

Your Whitsunday Wanderings adventure begins with a relaxed evening in Airlie Beach.

Fly into Proserpine Airport (PPP) at any time today and transfer to our accommodation in Airlie Beach. Check-in is from 2 pm - if you arrive earlier, feel free to unwind by the pool or explore the town at your leisure.

The group will meet at 5 pm for a welcome briefing followed by our first dinner together.

Accommodation: Motel, Airlie Beach

Day 2 Tue 04 Aug All Aboard the Solway Lass

This morning, you have the option to take on the Honeyeater Lookout trail (unguided). This challenging but highly rewarding hike is part of the Whitsunday Great Walk. The climb is steep, so bring plenty of water to keep hydrated – the sweeping island views from the top are worth every step.

In the afternoon we’ll regroup for a pre-boarding briefing and then board our majestic tall ship, Solway Lass. As we set sail, keep watch for turtles or rays, and enjoy a drink as the sun sinks behind the islands.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Accommodation: Cabin, The Solway Lass

Day 3 Wed 05 Aug Whitsunday Peak Hike

Start the day with a leisurely breakfast on deck as we sail into beautiful Cid Harbour.

After lunch on board, we transfer to the island to hike up Whitsunday Peak, winding through rainforest and coastal scrub to reach one of the region’s best viewpoints – the "Roof of the Whitsundays". Soak up the views, then return to the ship for dinner under the stars, anchored in a peaceful bay.

Distances: Whitsunday Peak appx 5 km or 4 hrs / Difficult

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Cabin, The Solway Lass

Day 4 Thu 06 Aug Whitehaven Beach Snorkel/SUP/Marine Clean Up Program & Chance Bay Hike

Enjoy breakfast and sip your morning coffee on deck as we set sail to South Whitehaven Beach. From here we'll walk either to, or from, the peaceful Chance Bay (tide-dependent). The trail meanders through secluded forests, bringing relief from the tropical sun. We then head to Whitehaven Beach South where you can choose a SUP adventure or beach-combing, and join a marine debris clean-up program to support these pristine shores.

After a hearty lunch back on board, we sail to Chalkie’s Beach on Haslewood Island for a short lookout walk and your first snorkel among colourful coral gardens teeming with fish - if you're lucky you'll encounter a sea turtle! Our highlight of the day is Hill Inlet lookout - its swirling turquoise waters and white sands are simply unforgettable.

Distances: Chance Bay appx 3.5 km (Moderate), Hill Inlet Lookout appx 1.3 km (Easy)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Cabin, The Solway Lass

Day 5 Fri 07 Aug Whitsunday Cairn Hike

Refuel with lunch aboard, then sail to Hook Island’s magical Nara Inlet for a stroll to the ancient Ngaro sea caves, where you can view Indigenous rock paintings. We’ll finish the day anchored at Stonehaven for the night.

This afternoon, we have the opportunity to participate in the Eye on the Reef citizen science program to learn about coral health and conservation. As the sun begins to set, we gather to watch the sunset over farewell drinks on a private beach, before sailing to South Molle Island for tonight's last anchorage.

The Adventurous Women Way

The magic of our trips comes from travellers bringing a supportive mindset, a go-with-the-flow attitude, and a genuine spirit of adventure.

The itinerary could change should weather and tide conditions deem our route on any given day to be unsafe.  The ship may also travel under motor power instead of sails, dependent on weather. You are also living on board a 100+ year old tall ship in cabins / shared bathrooms, so please don't expect luxury - yes clean and tidy, however not luxury!

Good news is that this is a private charter just for Adventurous Women meaning that you're not sharing with anyone else other than our group!

Solo Travellers

If you’re travelling solo not to worry, you’re in good company! Many of our travellers join solo and our trips are designed to feel welcoming and supportive from the moment you arrive. It’s a great way to meet like-minded women, and friendships often form quickly along the way.

We’ll pair you with a room/cabin buddy for the trip. Or, if you’d prefer your own room/cabin, this option is available for an additional supplement.  You can select your rooming preference at the time of booking or reach out to us for more information.

Arrival and Departure details

The tour begins in Airlie Beach on 3 August at 5.00pm. A single arrival transfer from Proserpine Airport to Airlie Beach is included.  We disembark the Solway Lass on 11 August around 11.30am.  Please ensure your flight departs after 2:30 pm to allow sufficient time for transfer and check-in.

Who will be leading the trip?

All AW trips are accompanied by one of our experienced Tour Leaders. Their role is to take the hassle out of your travels and help you get the most out of your experience, while embracing the Adventurous Women way.

You’ll also be supported by the Solway Lass captain and crew. They will not only helm the ship but also ensure you are well-fed and looked after!

Do you accommodate dietary requests?

We do our best to accommodate dietary requirements and food allergies on every tour.

As we will be spending five nights on the Solway Lass, ingredients for meals are purchased and portioned in advance. We're committed to meeting dietary needs wherever possible, but it's important that any requirements are communicated accurately at the time of booking.  If you request a specific diet (e.g. vegetarian, gluten-free) but then choose not to follow it during the trip, it can lead to unnecessary waste and may also mean that other guests have less food available to them. We appreciate your help in planning responsibly so we can cater fairly and effectively for everyone.

Accommodation

We’ll spend one night in Colonial Palms Motor Inn before boarding the historic Solway Lass for five nights in the Whitsundays. Chartered exclusively for our group, the Solway Lass is a lovingly restored 125-year-old tall ship full of character, charm, and a few quirks that come with her rich history.

Cabin options include ensuite single rooms, single rooms with shared bathroom facilities, and twin-share cabins with shared facilities. There are four shared showers and four shared toilets onboard. Cabins are a bit on the small side but designed primarily for sleeping, while the spacious deck areas provide plenty of room to relax, read a book, enjoy the sea breeze, or simply soak up the stunning scenery.

What do I need too bring onboard?

A detailed packing list will be provided prior to departure. Please pack in a soft-sided duffle bag or carry-on sized bag, as hard suitcases and wheeled luggage are not permitted onboard.

As storage space is limited, we recommend bringing only what you need for the trip and packing for varying weather conditions, including cool, windy evenings on deck.
