Whitsunday Wanderings - Sail, Hike, Explore
Explore the Great Barrier Reef on board a 122-year-old tall ship! Over seven days, enjoy a wonderful mix of sailing, ...
All the joy of a multi-day hike, without hauling your gear from camp to camp. Just you, a light day pack and the trail ahead!
Pack-free hiking is close to what it sounds like, with one important thing worth clearing up: do you still carry a pack? Yes, but only a small day pack with your essentials, things like water, snacks, a layer and your camera. Your main luggage travels separately, so you're never carrying a heavy load on your back.
It works because you base yourself in comfortable accommodation and head out on the trails each day. You'll typically stay several nights in the same spot, maybe even the duration of the trip if it's a shorter one in a special region. That means far less packing and unpacking, a proper bed and hot shower each night, and a lot more energy left for the hiking itself.
Adventure by day, comfort by night. New to the idea? Here's a closer look at what pack-free hiking is all about.

Yes, but just a day pack. You'll carry what you need for the day - water, snacks, a rain layer and the like - while your main bag is transported separately or waiting back at your accommodation. No heavy load, no carrying your whole life on your back. Just comfortable hiking with the essentials close to hand.
Because you often stay several nights in the same place, there's a lot less packing and unpacking than a traditional hike. You fall into a lovely rhythm: out on the trail by day, back to a comfy bed, a hot shower and a good meal by night. It's a relaxed way to take on a multi-day hike.
Without a heavy pack to manage, a multi-day hike becomes far more achievable and a lot more enjoyable. You'll still want a reasonable level of fitness for the trails, but you can spend your energy on the views and the company rather than the weight on your back.
